Half Double Crochet Corner to Corner known as C2C can be done. Floating crochet border diagram included. I prefer the floating border as the stitches will naturally rest in the space that you have provided in the first round. It's a beautiful finished look. You can change the corners in the 2nd round to be (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) instead to provide space so you can continually grow it out. However, with half double crochet, some corners should be (1 hdc, ch 2, 1 hdc) as it is a less tall stitch. You may need to see for yourself if you go in this direction.
